Jonathan "Joe" Myles, Sr.

Jonathan "Joe" Myles, Sr., a beacon of unwavering love and generosity, passed away on August 30, 2024, after a courageous battle with an extended illness. Born on October 18, 1941, in Bay Springs, Alabama, Joe's journey through life was marked by his selfless nature and an infectious spirit that positively impacted all who knew him. He departed this world in Dothan, Alabama, surrounded by the love of his family and the many lives he touched.

Joe was the beloved husband of Murlene Myles, his partner and best friend for 60 years. Together, they raised a beautiful family, instilling values of kindness and hard work in their children: Renwick (Gloria) Myles, Myra Powe-Jones (Leonard), Damita Oliver, Sonja Myles, and Jonathan Myles, Jr. He was also a cherished father figure to his special daughters, Billie (Malvin) Glover and Tammi Walker. His legacy lives on through his adored grandchildren: Ashleigh (Jon) Burditt, Ryan (Celeste) Smith, Morgan Oliver, Asia Glover, Breiana Myles, Allen Oliver, and Isaiah Oliver, and 10 great grandchildren. Joe was a caring brother to Sarries (Lucious) Albertie and Rubbies Beacham and a respected brother-in-law to Bobbie Myles, Carrie St. Clair, Rose Taylor, Annie Carrol, Willie Maude (George) Jones, and Addie McKinzie. A host of nieces, nephews, and other family members also survive him. 

Joe was preceded in death by his parents, Willie "Bill" and Inez Myles, his three brothers, Willie Frank Myles, Sr., Freddy Myles, Sr., and Horatio Myles, and a dear grandchild, Jonathan Traevon Myles. Their memories remained a guiding light throughout his life.

A hardworking man, Joe dedicated 33 years to Sears Department Store, where he was recognized as the Top Salesperson, a testament to his dedication and charismatic personality. He also served as a bus driver for Dothan City Schools and took pride in ensuring the safety and care of the children he transported. His commitment to excellence extended to his work in the janitorial service, where he was known for his fairness and strong work ethic.

Joe's life was a reflection of the quote by Ralph Waldo Emerson, "To know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded." He embodied this sentiment, always striving to make a positive difference in the lives of others. His love for his family was the cornerstone of his existence, and his role as a wonderful father was one he cherished deeply.

Those who knew Joe will remember him as a loving, generous, and selfless man. His memory will be honored as one who gave more than he took and whose presence made the world a kinder place. His laughter, wisdom, and the warmth of his spirit will be deeply missed, but the impact of his life will continue to resonate with all who had the privilege of knowing him.

His story does not end here, for it is etched in the hearts of his family and friends and in the many lives he enriched. A celebration of Joe’s life will be held at 11 am on Friday, September 6, 2024 at Sunset Funeral Home Chapel with Clarence Robinson officiating.
