Juanita Mathis, a beloved mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, and friend, passed away peacefully on July 2, 2023, in Dothan, Alabama. Born on July 31, 1933, in Houston County, Alabama, Juanita was a beacon of love, selflessness, and generosity throughout her 89 years of life.

Juanita was a cherished member of the Mathis and Cunningham families. She was the sister of Robert Cunningham (Brenda) and Helen Whitehead (Dan). She was a devoted mother to her children, Allen Mathis (Kim), Russell Mathis (Brandi), Joanne Tabor (Mike), and her special daughter, Judy Brown (Jimmy). Juanita was also a loving grandmother to Ashley Harris (O'Neal), Chanda Taylor (Robert), Robert "Bubba" Pickron, Nicholas Mathis, Megan Mathis, LaKeisha Leigh Da Silva (Chris), Stephanie Mathis (Jon), Michaela and Wren Mathis, Jeffrey Adams, Jeremy Adams (Tammy), Keith and Shannon Ivey, and a proud great-grandmother to many, including her special great-grandchildren, Hallie Pickron, Ella Kate Pickron, Adyson McNeil, and Annslee Hyatt. She was preceded in death by her parents, Shelby and Eunice Cunningham of Dothan; the father of her children, Kenneth Mathis; and her children, Deborah Ann Cunningham and Kenneth Lamar Ivey; and her brother, John and Shirley Cunningham.

Juanita's life was enriched by the companionship of her special friend for over 40 years, Harvey Earl Traylor, affectionately known as "Pops". Her home was also filled with the joy and comfort of her beloved pets, Sissy, Gabby, and Rascal.

Juanita was a dedicated employee of the City of Dothan until her retirement. Her commitment to her work was a testament to her strong work ethic and her dedication to serving her community. Her colleagues remember her as a reliable and hardworking individual who brought positivity and warmth to the workplace.

Juanita was a woman of many interests. She enjoyed spending quality time with her family, creating memories that will be cherished for generations to come. Juanita was also a keen shopper, relishing the thrill of finding a good bargain with her daughter, granddaughters, and grandson. She loved her trips to Biloxi, where she enjoyed the vibrant atmosphere and the opportunity to unwind and relax.

Juanita was a woman of remarkable character. She was loving, always ready to offer a comforting word or a warm hug. She was selfless, putting the needs of others before her own. She was generous, sharing what she had with those around her without expecting anything in return. Her kindness and compassion touched the lives of many and left a lasting impact on all who knew her.

Juanita Mathis will be deeply missed by her family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing her. Her spirit will live on in the hearts of those she loved and in the memories they shared. As we say goodbye to Juanita, we celebrate her life and the love, joy, and generosity she brought into our lives. Her legacy will continue to inspire and guide us, reminding us of the importance of love, selflessness, and generosity.

A special thanks to her Doctor, nurses, chaplain, social worker, and a special hospice nurse, Cassidy Littlefield for their loving care during our time of need.

A private family service will be held at a later date at Ms. Mathis' home.
