June Eleanor Ashton beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great-grandmother, passed away peacefully on Sunday Decemeber 8, 2024, surrounded by her loving family. Born on June 29, 1941, in Brooklyn, NY, June brought warmth and kindness into the lives of everyone she met. She resided in Washingtonville, NY, where she spent her later years cherishing her family and her passions.
June was preceded in death by her parents, Margaret and Harry Ashton, and her brothers, Joseph and Donald Keane. She leaves behind a loving legacy in her daughters, Debra Cooper (Paul) and Barbara Shelt (Glen), and her cherished grandchildren: Vanessa Wilson (Brad), Tanya Dugal, Andrea Pereira, Max Dugal (Sonia), Johnathan Shelt, Allison Shelt, Evelina Smith (James), and Jackson Cooper. Her great-grandchildren—Jessica Austin, Tyler, Savannah, Henry, and Eleanor Wilson; Samantha and Coralyn Buffham, Amelia and Alana Dugal, Donovan and Dathan Remmy; and Hunter Pereira, and Priscilla Munn—and her great-great-granddaughters, Alice and Sophia Austin, were a constant source of joy for her.
June had a lifelong love of reading and a talent for storytelling. Writing short stories was her passion, and it was her dream to one day publish them. She also had a creative spirit, which she expressed through crocheting. Her handmade scarves and blankets, crafted with care and love, brought comfort to her family and friends. June had a special place in her heart for animals, especially cats, whose companionship she treasured.

June's independence was rooted in her steadfast and determined nature. Which she honed during her years as a Bridge and Tunnel Officer for New York City's Triborough Bridge and Tunnel Authority. It was a role she approached with a sense of duty and determination, ensuring the safety and efficiency of the countless commuters who depended on her. Her time in this position not only showcased her strength but also her resilience and ability to remain calm under pressure—a testament to her character.
For some time, she also worked on Wall Street, a testament to her versatility and drive. Balancing her career with her role as a devoted mother, June worked two jobs to support her family. Her commitment to providing a loving and stable home was unwavering, even during the most challenging times. She found ways to make life joyful and memorable for her daughters, Debra and Barbara. Summer trips to Rockaway Playland and homemade lasagna dinners were just a few of the ways she brought warmth and joy into their lives.
June had a vibrant spirit that shone in everything she did. She had a passion for shopping and always took pride in keeping her nails perfectly manicured—small but meaningful ways she expressed her individuality. Her determination to tackle new challenges extended beyond her career; she didn't get her driver's license until she was 40, a milestone that reflected her courage and persistence.
Her life, like any life well-lived, was not without its share of challenges. The choices she made often provided opportunities for reflection, teaching moments, and growth—both for herself and for those around her. June had a way of turning life's hardships into steppingstones, demonstrating that perseverance and a touch of humor could carry you through even the hardest of times. At the core of her being, though, was an unshakable love for her family.
June also cherished family traditions, like lively game nights, summer vacations in the Poconos, and her famous lasagna, which became a favorite among family and friends alike. These moments reflected the depth of her love for her family, a love that was unwavering and unconditional.
