Kenneth Larry Mcgill

December 26, 1941 — June 11, 2019

Heaven welcomed Kenneth “Larry” McGill on Tuesday, June 11, 2019, in Dothan, Alabama at the age of 77 surrounded by his loving family. Larry is survived by his beloved wife of 46 years, Mary Lou McGill; his children Mandy McGill, Molly McGill Robinson (Chris), Melissa McGill and Kenneth Larry McGill II, his grandchildren, Zachary Shutters, Madison Shutters and Erin McGill; his sister, Joy Ann McGill Palmer (Mac), and his "fat and sassy" cat, Morris. He is preceded in death by his mother, Elsie (Snell) McGill, father, Lewie Frank McGill, and Sister Linda McGill Bentley. Larry was born on December 26, 1941, in Ozark, Alabama to Elsie (Snell) and Louie Frank McGill. After relocating to Panama City, Florida, Larry attended Bay County High School and became a star athlete in both baseball and football. He went on to attend the University of Alabama on a football scholarship after being recruited by Coach Paul “Bear” Bryant. As a fullback and linebacker, Larry played on Coach Bryant’s historic 1961 National Championship team. Larry proudly served his country as a Captain in the United States Army, receiving a purple heart for his service during the Vietnam War. After his service to our country, he became a successful businessman working for the McDonald's corporation, later becoming a franchisee. When given the opportunity to acquire the Dothan area market he felt that, as Coach Bryant said, "momma called. And when momma calls you just have to come runnin". He jumped at the opportunity to return to his roots. Larry was known as a hard-working businessman, a generous philanthropist, and a devout Alabama fan. He sponsored countless local events and was a member of the Chamber of Commerce and a Rotarian for over 20 years in Dothan. One of his most cherished times in the community surrounded his involvement with the Special Olympics. Most importantly, he was a husband, father, grandfather, and friend to many. He will be truly missed by everyone who knew him, and his legacy lives on through his family, friends, and his work in the community. The family would like to say a special thank you to his doctor, wife, and dear friends Dr. John and Courtney Calhoun. And his therapists Fran and Lindsey and the staff at First Choice Hospice. A Celebration of his Life will be held on Saturday, June 15, 2019 at 4 PM at Sunset Memorial Park, 1700 Barrington Road, Midland City, Alabama 36350. In honor of Larry's love for the University of Alabama, we are asking that everyone wear Alabama attire. In lieu of flowers, please make memorial donations, in his honor, to Dothan Special Olympics or to the Ronald McDonald House.
