Phyllis Mills Wingo

November 12, 1937 — April 4, 2025

Phyllis Mills Wingo was a beacon of love and selflessness whose faith-filled life left an indelible mark on all who knew her. Born on November 12, 1937, in Fort Gaines, GA, Phyllis entered into eternal rest on April 4, 2025, in Dothan, AL, at the age of 87.

Phyllis was a proud graduate of Eufaula High School, after which she pursued her passion for education, earning her bachelor's degree from Judson College and a master's degree from Troy State University. She dedicated an impressive 37 years to teaching Senior English at Houston County High School and 20 years of teaching Sunday School. Her commitment to education did not go unnoticed, as she was revered by her colleagues and beloved by countless students who affectionately knew her as Mrs. Wingo until her retirement in 2002.

Her love of learning and literature was paralleled only by her devotion to her faith and her church community. Phyllis was a vital member of her church choir and cherished the fellowship and spiritual growth she found in small groups. She was known for her kindness, often mailing cards to many church members, a simple yet profound act that brightened the lives of others.

Phyllis was a woman whose presence was a warm embrace to the soul. Her interests were a reflection of her loving and nurturing spirit. An avid reader, she found joy in the pages of countless books, which were, no doubt, a source of the wisdom she so generously imparted. She held a special place in her heart for the serene beauty of the mountains and the adventure of traveling, experiences that enriched her life and those of her companions.

To her grandchildren, Phyllis was "Sweet Mama," a name that encapsulated the tenderness and care she showered upon them. Her family was the cornerstone of her life, and she leaves behind a legacy of love and steadfastness. Though she was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Ross “Bunny” Wingo, her spirit lives on through her daughters, Laney (Brandon) Adkinson and Lea (Dean) Chisum; her grandchildren, Beth (Jacob) Handy and Lauren (Gaspar) Hernandez; and her great-grandchild, Levi Handy.

Phyllis's life was one of giving, from her selfless dedication to her students to the boundless love she poured into her family. She will be remembered as a woman whose heart knew no bounds and whose faith guided her through a life well-lived. Her memory will be cherished and kept alive in the stories passed down through generations and the countless lives she touched with her kindness.

As we bid farewell to Phyllis Mills Wingo, we celebrate a life that exemplified the very best of what it means to be loving and selfless. Her journey on this earth may have come to a close, but her influence will continue to resonate in the community she nurtured, the students she inspired, and the family she adored. Phyllis's legacy is one of unwavering faith, enduring love, and the gentle power of a life dedicated to service and kindness. Her light will forever shine in the memories of those who were fortunate enough to know her.
