Laura Mae Smith, 70, a resident of Ashford died Thursday, February 24, 2011 at Extendicare Nursing Home.

Funeral services will be held 11 am Monday, February 28, 2011 at Sunset Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Hayward Teague officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Park Funeral Home with Robert Byrd directing. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 10-11 am prior to the service at the funeral home. Mrs. Smith was a member of St. Paul Baptist Church.Mrs. Smith was born October 26, 1940 in Dale County and she lived most of her life in Ashford. She was the daughter of the late Annie Laura Barrow and James McLeod. She attended Ashford Colored High School where she graduated in 1959. Laura was joined in marriage to Johnnie C. Smith on August 8th, 1960. She was a member of St. Paul Baptist Church of Ashford, AL. Laura was the oldest of fourteen siblings. She is preceded in death by Yvonna McLeod, Cathy Mae McLeod, Willie James McLeod and Milton Lee McLeod and one step daughter: Mary Ellen McGriff. She leaves to mourn a devoted husband of 50 years Johnnie C. Smith; three sisters, Annie Rene McLeod Thompson of Headland, AL, Janice Marie McLeod Maybin, and Glenda Sue McLeod Willie Melton of Ashford, AL; five brothers, Charlie C. McLeod of Ashford, AL, Walter Ray Louvenia McLeod of Dothan, AL, Calvin Junior McLeod of Enterprise, AL, Howard Lee McLeod of Ashford, AL, and Willie Clarence McLeod; one step-son-in-law Ivory MeMe McGriff; three step-grandchildren, Tarrell Almitra McGriff, Alex special friend Tasha McGriff Dothan AL, and Estella McGriff of Gordon, AL; three sisters-in-law, Mandy Smith, Zeolar Snell, and Mary Langston; two brothers-in-law, Willie James Smith and Willie C. Snell; two aunts, Eva McLeod and Myrtle Smedley of Ozark, AL; two dear friends, Willie B. Cook and Louise Bunk McCarter both of Ashford, AL; and a host of nieces, nephews other relatives and friends. Burial Date: January 1, 1970
