Lawrence Jay Povlacs

March 13, 1943 — January 20, 2014

Lawrence “Larry” Jay Povlacs of Dothan, AL passed away January 20, 2014 at Flowers Hospital. He was born March 13, 1943 in Akron, Ohio the son of Lawrence and Lena Povlacs.

Larry grew up on a farm in Akron with his five sisters and loving parents. In 1966, not long after attending Kent State in Ohio and Allied Institute in Chicago, he moved his then wife Patricia and daughter Debbie to Dothan where he began a long career in latex manufacturing and industrial automation. A renowned engineer and machine designer, Larry held many patents and realized many successes in his business endeavors. Though claiming to be retired, Larry could often be found at his office at G&P Industries where he was a partner. Previous endeavors included Alatech Healthcare where he was the CEO and Aladan Corp. where he was one of the founders and its Executive Vice President. At its height, Aladan employed over 1000 people in the Wiregrass area.

His successes in his career however, was overshadowed by his greatest joy, his large family. After becoming a widower in 1998 he then married his loving wife Betty Povlacs. This large happily blended family gave him great joy and he often could be found walking with his grandchildren by the pond.

Preceded in death by his Father Lawrence Povlacs, Mother Lena Povlacs, wife Patricia Jane Povlacs, sisters Patricia Grubs and Sandra Kemp and Brother-in-law C.H. Bud Whitsett.

Survived by his loving wife, Betty Povlacs; children, Deborah Hughes Paul, Paula Fisher Micheal, Lawrence A. Povlacs Rachel, Brandy Givens Jon, Shoanette Smith, and Jeff Green; grandchildren, Christopher and Nathan Hughes, Ryan, Kassia, and Jordan Fisher, Evan and Patrick Povlacs, Abigail, Shiloh, and Eden Givens, Michael Ellis, Ashley and Tyler McLendon, Katie Boon, Hannah Hutcheson, Hunter Summerlin, Zachary Smith, Seth and Kaitlyn Green; sisters, Clara Whitsett, Phyllis Kenreich Ken, and Joyce Lunde John; many nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be Friday, January 24th at Sunset Memorial Park, Dothan, Alabama from 6-8 p.m. The funeral will be held on Saturday, January 25th at Bethel Baptist Church, Dothan, Alabama at 2:00 p.m. with burial following at Crestlawn Cemetery with Robert Byrd directing.

Serving as pallbearers will be, Christopher Hughes, Nathan Hughes, Jon Givens, Patrick Daniel, Jeff Green, Micheal Ellis.
