Lester Hutchinson, a beloved family man, respected educator, and faithful follower of Christ, passed away peacefully on June 29, 2024, at the age of 96. Born August 13, 1927 in Salt Lake City, Utah, he left this world in Dothan, Alabama, surrounded by the love and memories of a life well-lived.
Lester proudly served his country in the United States Navy towards the end of World War II. His dedication to service continued as a high school math teacher in the Panama Canal Zone for 25 years, where he inspired countless students with his passion for education and ability to make complex concepts accessible to all. After a fulfilling career, Lester retired and moved to Dothan with his wife, LaRue, in the mid-1980s.
He was the loving husband of Ruth LaRue Hutchinson, who preceded him in death in 2020, after 67 years of marriage. Lester's legacy is carried on by his sons, David Hutchinson (Lupe) and Mark Hutchinson, and daughters, Eve Giroux (Mark) and Ann McAvoy (Wayne). He was a loving grandfather to Brian Lester Hutchinson (Courtney), David Joshua Hutchinson, Janell Sims (Richard), Claire Giroux, Louis Giroux, and Charles Giroux. His great-grandchildren, Zoey Hutchinson, Owen Sims, Callum Sims, Blake Sims, and Leah Hutchinson, will miss his gentle guidance and warm presence. He is also survived by his sister, Sarah Ann Christensen. Lester was predeceased by his brothers, Walter Bruce Hutchinson, Clyde Junior Hutchinson, Abraham Alonzo Hutchinson, sister Donna Arbogast, and his parents Alonzo Clyde Hutchinson and Flora Gertrude Cunnington Hutchinson.
Lester took great pleasure in reading western novels and all types of books. Lester enjoyed golfing, deep sea fishing, and participating in his local bridge club.
A member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Lester's faith was the cornerstone of his existence. He embodied the essence of a servant's heart, always seeking to care for others and provide support wherever it was needed. His generous spirit touched many lives, and his actions often spoke louder than words.
Lester Hutchinson's life was a testament to the power of kindness, the importance of education, and the strength of faith. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered as a man who lived a life full of purpose and grace. As we say goodbye, we take comfort in knowing that his story does not end here and his influence will continue through generations.
A memorial service will be held on Monday, July 22, 2024 at 11am in the Sunset Funeral Home Chapel. The family will receive friends at 10:30 am prior to the service. Lester will be laid to rest next to his wife in Sunset Memorial Park Cemetery.
The Hutchinson family would like to recognize SouthernCare Hospice Services for their kind care and support.
