Martha Jane (Franks) Nichols

Martha Jane Nichols, a beacon of courage and love, passed away on April 5, 2024, after a valiant fight with cancer. Born on April 24, 1935, in Carbon Hill, Alabama, Martha's vibrant spirit and zest for life left an indelible mark on all who knew her. She departed this life in Dothan, Alabama, surrounded by the warmth of her family and the memories of a life well-lived.

Martha, the youngest of eleven siblings, was born to the late Dee and Maggie Tipper Franks. Her roots in Carbon Hill were deep, and her upbringing there shaped the remarkable woman she became. A proud graduate of Judson College, Martha carried the values of her education throughout her life, embodying grace, intelligence, and determination.

Her professional journey was marked by her long tenure as a secretary for Ashford High School and Wicksburg, and her dedicated service with the Houston County Board of Education at the Central Office. Martha's work ethic and commitment to excellence left a lasting impact on her colleagues and the many students she encountered.

Beyond her professional life, Martha's passions painted a picture of a woman who embraced the joys of life. An ardent supporter of Auburn University, she lived and breathed Auburn Football. Her schedule was meticulously planned around gameday, and her enthusiasm for her team was infectious. In the words of Helen Keller, another proud Alabamian, "Life is either a daring adventure or nothing at all." Martha lived by these words, approaching every Auburn game and every day as a new adventure to be cherished.

A lover of crossword puzzles, reading, and the beauty of birds, Martha found solace and joy in the simple pleasures of life. Her son-in-law, Shirl "Squirrel" Creel, held a special place in her heart, treasured as much as a son. Her love for her family was boundless, especially for her daughter Lee Adkinson (Shirl "Squirrel" Creel), her adored grandchildren, Jessica Marie (Carson) Clark, and her cherished nephew, Frank Ernsberger.

Her spirit was further sustained by the unwavering support of her very close family friend, Tammy Barr, and her other special friends, Linda and Brenda McBee and Neda Womack. Martha's connection with her "War Eagle" friends, Sheila Shelley and Beth Peek, both from Eclectic, Alabama, were a source of great joy and camaraderie.

The family is deeply grateful for the support and guidance provided by Jermal Powell, who was instrumental through many medical journeys. They also extend their appreciation to Tanya Woods, Martha's sitter, who, though with her for a short time, provided companionship and friendship.

Martha's faith was an important part of her life as a member of First United Methodist Church. Her courage in the face of her cancer battle since 2016 demonstrated her unwavering strength and faith.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Albert Murray Nichols, and her daughter, Alice Marie Nichols. Martha's legacy is carried on by those who loved her and will continue to honor her memory by living life with the same adventurous and loving spirit she embodied.

Martha Nichols lived courageously, loved deeply, and laughed often. Her life was a testament to the power of positivity and the strength of the human spirit. As we say farewell to this extraordinary woman, we take comfort in knowing that her legacy will continue to inspire and guide us. Martha Jane Nichols will be dearly missed, but her light will shine on in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know her.
