Mary Agnes Stephenson, 80, of Webb passed on Sunday, March 2nd at a local hospital after a courageous battle with cancer.
Ms. Stephenson was born in October 14, 1933 in Ottumwa, Iowa, which she continued to call home for much of her early life. After earning her degree in Culinary Arts from Indian Hills Community College, she was celebrated by her family and friends as their resident gourmet chef. Ms. Stephenson moved to Dothan, Alabama in 1981 where she resided for the remainder of her life. Always thirsting for knowledge, she later graduated from Wallace Community College with a degree in Liberal Arts. Ms. Stephenson loved the Dothan community, working at the Ramada Inn, SARCOA, and Habitat for Humanity until her retirement in 1984. Even after retirement, she enjoyed the company of her friends and the staff at Rose Hill Senior Center. She was an avid writer, publishing her first children’s book, Adventures in a Tree House, in 2006. She was a talented painter and lover of history. Later in life, she reconnected with many distant relatives through her love of genealogy.
Ms. Stephenson is survived by her son Michael Stephenson; her daughters, Michelle Alisa Stephenson, Marshelle Lainey Stephenson-Peters and Melissa Alene-Dawn Stephenson-Ira; 14 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren; her brothers, Alfred Leonard and Jerry Leonard; her sisters, Patricia Leonard and Lorrine Summerfield. She was lovingly cared for until her passing by her granddaughter and daughter-in-law, Danielle and Sherry Stephenson. She was preceded in death by her husband Monroe Stephenson. She will forever be remembered by those who knew her as a loving Mother, Grandmother, Sister, and Friend.
A graveside service will be held at 2:00 PM on Tuesday, March 4, 2014 at Sunset Memorial Park officiated by Pastor Bobby Marks. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made in her memory to SARCOA, 1075 South Brannon Stand Road, Dothan, AL, 36305.
