Mary Elizabeth Stewart

Mary Elizabeth Stewart, 79, of Ozark passed away Friday May 15, 2015 at her residence.

Funeral services will be held 10am Saturday May 23, 2015 at Sunset Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Williams officiating.  Burial will follow in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens Cemetery with Robert Byrd directing.  The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 9am until 10am Saturday.

Mrs. Stewart was born January 4, 1936 in Huntington, Long Island, New York. In her early twenties she moved to Los Angeles, CA working as a model, movie extra and part-time telephone operator.  She later became employed with the Los Angeles District Attorney's Office as an investigator in the Bureau of Family Support until her retirement in 1989.  Mrs. Stewart moved to Ozark in the early 1990’s; she served as treasurer of the Alabama Democratic Conference, secretary of the board of directors at Dale County Library.  She also served as the first minority chairman of the Historic Chattahoochee Commission and the Alabama Historical Commission. Mrs. Stewart was preceded in death by her husband, of 31 years Almus Nathaniel Stewart and step-son Almus Nathaniel III.

Survivors include, her daughter, April Stewart; three grandchildren, Dana Stewart Harris, Jonelle Stewart and Quiana Stewart; 9 great-grandchildren; her brother, Earl Henry; her sisters, Henrietta Leonard, Deborah Houston, Carol Williams, Jeannette Strong, Jacqueline Etheridge, Estelle Henry, Beverly Andrews and Margaret Breland; as well as many nieces and nephews.
