Maxine (Tew) Smith

January 30, 1932 — June 16, 2023

New Bern

Maxine Smith, a beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, passed away peacefully on June 16, 2023, in New Bern, North Carolina, after an extended illness. Born on January 30, 1932, in Dothan, Alabama, Maxine was a loving, faith-filled, and friendly woman who left a lasting impact on the lives of those who knew her.

The daughter of the late W. H. Tew and Lochie B. Tew, Maxine was one of six siblings. She is survived by her brothers, Carl Randolph (Ardyeth) Tew and Max (Ruthie) Tew, and was preceded in death by her brothers, Talmadge Tew, James Tew, and John Tew.

Maxine was a devoted mother to her children, Steven Smith, Ricky (Frances) Smith, Rebecca Smith, and late son, Robert "Bobby" Thaxton Smith. She was also a doting grandmother to nine grandchildren, fifteen great-grandchildren, and six great-great-grandchildren. Maxine was predeceased by her daughter-in-law, Janie Smith.

Throughout her life, Maxine was deeply committed to her family, her faith, and her community. She was an active member of her church and participated in various associations that allowed her to share her love for Jesus Christ with others. As Helen Keller once said, "The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched - they must be felt with the heart." Maxine's love for her family and her faith was felt deeply by those around her.

Maxine had a passion for gardening and took great pride in cultivating beautiful flowers and bountiful vegetable gardens. Her love for nature extended to her family, as she would often share her gardening knowledge and skills with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Her love for gardening not only brought joy to her own life but also to the lives of those who were fortunate enough to enjoy the fruits of her labor.

Maxine was known for her warmth, kindness, and generosity. She was always willing to lend a helping hand, whether it was to her family, friends, or neighbors. Her friendly demeanor and genuine care for others made her a cherished member of her community. Maxine's strong faith in Jesus Christ was evident in the way she lived her life and treated those around her. She was a shining example of what it means to be a faithful servant of God, and her legacy will live on through the countless lives she touched.

A celebration of Maxine's life will be held at 2 pm on Monday, June 19, 2023 in Sunset Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Eddie Littlefield officiating. She will be laid to rest in Memory Hill Cemetery following the celebration. The family will be receiving friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home on Monday.
