Mrs. Mellijo McDonald Helms from Dothan, AL, passed away on Sunday, January 14, 2018 at Wesley Place on Honeysuckle. She was 90.
Funeral services will be held at 2pm on Thursday, January 18, 2018 at Sunset Memorial Funeral Home with Pastor Lydia Temonia officiating. Burial will follow in the Memory Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the funeral service. In lieu of flowers, please make donations in her memory to Tabernacle United Methodist Church, 4205 S. Brannon Stand Rd., Taylor, AL 36305.
Mrs. Helms was born on December 30, 1927 in the Wesley Chapel Community in Geneva County to the late John Barton and Clara McLaney McDonald. She graduated from Geneva County High School in Hartford. She worked as a bookkeeper and was retired from Unijax.
Mrs. Helms was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. She was a wonderful cook. Homemade biscuits were a specialty. She was a faithful member of Tabernacle UMC for 52 years.
In addition to her parents, husband: Leonard Paul Helms; sisters: Miriam Berry and Mary Johnson; and brother: Clay McDonald preceded her in death.
Survivors include daughter: Susan Helms Gilley and son-in-law Michael Gilley, Dothan; Son: Leonard Paul Helms, Jr. and daughter-in-law Elaine T. Helms, Dothan; Granddaughters: Joanna Gilley Hillis and grandson-in-law David Hillis, Huntsville, AL; Holly Helms Chandler and Chad Chandler, Madison, AL; great granddaughters: Ivy Grace Hillis and Ellie Catherine Hillis, Huntsville, AL; Ava Chandler and Lila Chandler, Madison, AL; brother: Rev. Hugh McDonald and sister-in-law Margaret McDonald, Pensacola, FL; brother-in-law Bill Helms and sister-in-law Clara Mae Helms, Vine Grove, KY; sister-in-law Rosalyn Reed, Foley, AL; several nieces and nephews.
