Mildred Louise Gerleman

Mildred Louise Gerleman, affectionately known as Millie, passed away after an extended illness on September 14, 2024, in Dothan, Alabama. Born in Geneva County, Alabama on August 23, 1933, to parents Luther and Jewell Griggs Ausley, Millie's life was a testament to her loving and faith-filled spirit.

Millie spent her early years in Geneva County, Alabama, before moving with her family to Iowa. In 1969, she returned to Dothan, where she would remain for the rest of her life. Throughout her life, Millie was known for her strong work ethic, which she demonstrated in her career with JC Penney and later as Branch Manager with First Alabama Bank until her retirement.

She married Joseph Gerleman, with whom she shared a loving partnership until his passing. Millie’s involvement in her community was evident through her role as President of the Business Professional Women’s Club. Her dedication to her work and community service was only matched by her commitment to her family and her faith.

Millie was a cherished mother to her sons, John (Regina) Gerleman, Gerald Gerleman, and her daughter, Janet (Jeffrey) Owens. She took immense pride in her six grandchildren: Lindsay Gerleman, Amy Gerleman, Jerrod Gerleman, Jacob Owens, Lauren (Hunter) deBruyn, and Kelli (Bryan) Roberts; and her great grandchildren, Abby and Sam Gerleman, Aubrey Edenfield, Ben and Beau DeBruyn, and William Roberts. Her siblings, brother Max Ausley and sisters Merle Jones and Linda Smitherman, also survive her. Millie was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Joseph Gerleman, her parents, Luther and Jewell Ausley, by her brother, Wilbur Ausley, and her sister, Mavis Slay.

Those who knew Millie will remember her as a peacemaker who always sought harmony within the family. Her charismatic nature and hardworking demeanor were evident in everything she did. A great mother and fabulous southern cook, she was particularly renowned for her mashed potatoes. Her ability to organize and gather friends and family for events, whether playing cards or other get-togethers, will be fondly remembered by all who had the pleasure of attending.

As a devout member of St. Columba Catholic Church, Millie's faith was a guiding light in her life. She was a passionate believer, and her faith-filled life was an inspiration to many.

Millie's legacy will live on through the love she poured into her family, the friendships she cherished, and the positive impact she made on her community. Her loving nature, unwavering passion for life, and deep-seated faith will be missed by all who knew her.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 2 pm on Tuesday, September 17, 2024, at St. Columba Catholic Church, with Monsignor Patrick Gallagher officiating. Millie will be laid to rest in Memory Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Monday evening from 5-7 pm.

Millie's life was a beautiful journey that touched the hearts of many. As we say goodbye, we celebrate the love and light she brought into this world. May her soul rest in eternal peace.
