Mildred (Smith) Turner

October 26, 1938 — July 11, 2023

Mildred Maxine Smith Dowling Turner, fondly known as Maxine, passed away peacefully in Mobile, Alabama, on July 11, 2023. Born on October 26, 1938 in Brooksville, Florida, she lived a faith-filled, selfless, and spirited life for 84 years.

Maxine was the beloved mother of Rebecca Dowling Payne and her husband, Bryan, of Mobile, Alabama. She was an adoring grandmother to Zachary and Addison Payne. Maxine was preceded in death by her spouses, Don L Dowling and Donald Turner, as well as her brother, William "Billy" Smith.

Maxine's life was a testament to her unwavering faith and dedication to serving others. As a pastor's wife for the majority of her life, she served the church in many capacities, but none more than through her love of music. Over the years, she touched the lives of many congregations in Florida, North Carolina, and Alabama, creating a ripple effect of love, faith, and unity.

She had a unique ability to lift spirits through music, creating an atmosphere of worship and reverence that made each service special. Her devotion to her faith was evident in her daily life, and her favorite scripture was, "Be faithful unto death and I will give you the crown of life" (Revelation 2:10).

Maxine was also known for her selflessness, often putting the needs of others before her own. This was particularly evident in the last few months of her life, when she was grateful for the medical staff who cared for her and the friends and family who supported her. She was a beacon of strength and resilience, inspiring those around her with her courage and spirit.

In the words of Helen Keller, "Character cannot be developed in ease and quiet. Only through experience of trial and suffering can the soul be strengthened, ambition inspired, and success achieved." Maxine embodied this quote throughout her life, meeting challenges with grace and determination and inspiring others with her resilience.

Maxine's life was a beautiful testament to the power of faith, love, and service. She leaves behind a legacy of music, laughter, and unconditional love that will continue to inspire and uplift those who were fortunate enough to know her. She will be deeply missed but her spirit will live on in the hearts and memories of her loving family and the many lives she touched throughout her remarkable life.

A celebration of Maxine's life will be held at 4 pm Saturday, July 15, 2023 in Sunset Funeral Home Chapel. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the celebration.
