Myrtle Rae (Green) Sutton

November 23, 1943 — July 14, 2023

Ariton

Myrtle Rae Green Sutton, a cherished wife, mother, grandmother, and friend, passed away on July 14, 2023, following an extended illness. Born on November 23, 1943, in Covington, Alabama, Myrtle lived a life full of love, generosity, and selflessness.

Myrtle was a proud graduate of Straughn High School. Her work ethic and dedication led her to a successful 35-year career with GTE, where she began as a telephone operator. Her colleagues remember her as a hardworking and dedicated employee who brought joy and laughter to the workplace.

Myrtle was known for her colorful personality and her love for joking around. Her sense of humor was infectious, lighting up any room she entered. She had an eye for fashion, always dressed in pretty clothes that reflected her vibrant spirit. Her love for "junkin'" was well-known, and she had a particular fondness for collecting dishes, watches, and jewelry.

One of Myrtle's greatest joys in life was her family. She was a devoted wife to her husband, Gerald Sutton, Sr., and a loving mother to her children, Nancy (Ricky) Herring, Laura (Dennis) Walker, Gerald Sutton, Jr., Joy (Andrew) Trotter, and Eric (Brandi) Sutton. She also held a special place in her heart for her nieces and nephews, but especially Daniel (Nikki) Newberry and Tyler (Hayley) Newberry, who she treated like her own children, a special friend, Dot Kennedy, and her Fur Baby, Harley.

Myrtle was preceded in death by her parents, Yancey B. and Ruth Green, her first husband, J. T. Barr, her sister, Faye Green Newberry, and a nephew, Mark O'Neal Newberry.

Myrtle was a doting grandmother who loved spending time with her grandchildren. She enjoyed hosting tea parties and sewing quilts for them, creating memories that they will cherish forever. Her love extended to several great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews, all of whom she adored.

A lover of the outdoors, Myrtle found peace and tranquility in her garden. She had a green thumb and took great pride in her beautiful flowers and plants. Her garden was a testament to her nurturing nature, a place where she could share her love and care with the world.

In the words of those who knew her best, Myrtle was loving, generous, and selfless. She had a heart full of love and a spirit full of life. Her passing leaves a void that cannot be filled, but her memory lives on in the hearts of those who loved her.

A celebration of life will be held at 3:30 pm on Sunday, July 16, 2023 at Sunset Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Eugene Meadows and Brother David Walsh officiating. Myrtle will be laid to rest in Sunset Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Sunday one hour prior to the services. In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Ariton Cemetery Fund, PO Box 644, Ariton, AL 36311. The family wishes to express their sincere gratitude to Gentiva Hospice for their care and compassion during their time of need.

In remembering Myrtle, we celebrate a life well-lived, a woman well-loved, and a legacy that will continue to touch lives for generations to come. Her life was a testament to the power of love, the beauty of laughter, and the joy of living each day to the fullest. As we say goodbye to Myrtle Rae Green Sutton, we remember a woman who taught us to love deeply, laugh often, and live with generosity and kindness.
