Nettie Lou Smith, a resident of Dothan, passed away on Tuesday, June 23, 2020 at her residence. She was 89. A celebration of her life will be held at 11 am on Friday, June 26, 2020 in Sunset Funeral Home Chapel with Chaplin Kathy Stumbaugh officiating. Burial will follow in Gardens of Memory Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday evening from 5-7 pm. Mrs. Smith was born on May 31, 1931 in Houston County, Alabama and has lived her most of her life. This independent, family-oriented woman was a devoted Christian and loved spending any time possible with her family, especially her grandchildren. She was dedicated and supportive of her family, attending all of their sporting events. Mrs. Smith loved fishing at Highland Park on Lake Eufaula. She enjoyed watching Atlanta Braves baseball. She loved shopping at Sears, eating at Cracker Barrel and Olive Garden. Mrs. Smith was a member of Berean Baptist Church. Mrs. Smith was preceded in death by her parents, her husband who passed in 1993, Joseph Darvin Smith, Sr., her daughter, Mary Lou Richardson, by her step-grandson, Jonathan Murray, and by several brothers and sisters. Survivors include her sons, Joseph D. (Debbie) Smith, Jr. and David Smith; her 6 grandchildren, Jennifer (Jonathan) Ellis, Melissa (Thomas) Marsh, Amanda Braswell (Ryan Hardy), Taylor Murray, Jeffrey (Amy) Smith, Justin (Jacquelyn) Smith, and their mother, Carol Smith; 11 great-grandchildren; her sister, Peggy Strickland; and several nieces and nephews. Serving as active pallbearers will be Jeff Smith, Justin Smith, William Goff, Caleb Lyon, Kevin Foster, and Mark Hoffman.
