Owen Melvin Somerford, a cherished family patriarch and respected community member, passed away peacefully on December 10, 2024, in Dothan, Alabama, at the admirable age of 84. Born on December 30, 1939, in Cuba, Owen was a beacon of resilience and dedication, embodying the spirit of the American dream as a first-generation immigrant.
Owen's early years were spent in Jupiter, Florida, where he embraced life with a fervor that would become his hallmark. His passion for education led him to a rewarding career as a school teacher. Later, he transitioned into a successful career as a plastics and electric engineer, dedicating 33 years of service to Twitchell Technical Products before his well-deserved retirement.
Though he never had children of his own, Owen's heart knew no bounds when it came to family. He lovingly raised six children, welcoming them into his life and home as if they were his own. His role as "Poppa" was one he cherished deeply, and the love he held for his grandchildren and great-grandchildren was immeasurable. Owen set an example of unconditional love and support, always there for his family and ready to extend a helping hand to anyone in need. Everywhere Poppa lived or worked he made lifelong friends who would often visit him at his shop, where he would always stop what he was doing to “pull up a chair” and catch-up.
His wife, Sara Somerford, who preceded him in death, was his life's companion and partner in every adventure. Together, they built a legacy of love and generosity that continues to flourish through their extended family.
Owen was the epitome of a "Man's-Man," admired for his strength, integrity, and the respect he commanded. A hot rod enthusiast at heart, he had a lifelong love affair with fast cars and the thrill of driving muscle cars. This passion was a vibrant thread in the fabric of his life, reflecting his zest for excitement and adventure.
Words like handy, selfless, and kind are often used to describe Owen, but they only scratch the surface of the man he was. His ability to fix anything that was broken extended beyond the tangible; he was a mender of hearts and a builder of spirits. His selfless nature meant that he gave without expectation of return, and his kindness touched the lives of many, leaving a lasting impact on all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Owen's legacy is not only in the lives he directly touched but also in the community he served. His commitment to education and engineering left an indelible mark on those fields, and his contributions will be remembered by colleagues and students alike.
As we bid farewell to Owen Somerford, we celebrate a life lived to the fullest. His spirit, love, and memories will forever remain in the hearts of his beloved family and friends. Owen's story is one of triumph, love, and the enduring strength of the human spirit. He will be deeply missed, but his legacy will continue to inspire and guide us for generations to come.
