Pastor Robert O. Smith

Pastor Robert O. Smith, 70, a resident of Newton, AL passed away Sunday, January 24, 2016 at his residence.

Memorial services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 30, 2016 at New Covenant Church in Newton with Brother W.H. Wilson officiating. The family will receive friends following the service at the church. Flowers are being accepted or memorial donations may be made to the Gideon's, the Ark, or Potter's House at Easterling Prison.

Pastor Smith was born August 10, 1945 in Dothan and spent all of his life in the Wiregrass area. He was a 1964 graduate of Dothan High School and was employed with Hayes Intl. and DynCorp at Ft. Rucker. During his tenure at Ft. Rucker he also served as the Local Lodge President of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers from 1981-1988. Bro. Smith was the longtime pastor at New Covenant Church in Newton for the past 30+ years fulfilling his passion for helping others. In additional, he was involved with many other ministries in the community including: the Pastoral Association, the Ark, Easterling Prison "Potter's House" Ministry, and the Dale County Jail Ministry. His hobby was helping others, whenever the phone would ring or there was a need, Robert was always there to assist in any way needed. He was preceded in death by his parents, Raymond and Lucy Smith; his brother, Darwin Whitehead; and his wife Eugenia Smith.

Survivors include his wife Cynthia Smith; his sons, Adam Smith, Andy Smith, and Caleb Smith; his daughters, Anna Smith, Abby Seth Hardy and Amy John Sidonio; step-daughter, Samantha Mowrey; grandchildren, Savannah, Emily, Ian, Riley, Chasity, Regan, Grayson, Brad, and Matt; a brother, Billy Janice Whitehead; an aunt, Bonnie Willis; a niece, Debra Brock; a cousin, Marc Willis.
