Peter A Thosteson

June 1, 1941 — July 14, 2024

Peter Thosteson, a cherished father, grandfather, and friend, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday morning, July 14, 2024. He was 83. Peter was born in Detroit, Michigan on June 1st, 1941 and lived a full life marked by service, culinary passion, and an unwavering dedication to his family and community.

Peter's work ethic was unprecedented and led him to become a successful business owner, an adept electrician, and a beloved chef. His culinary skills shone brightly at the Dothan Ice Cream Company, where "Pete's Gumbo" became a local favorite. Peter's zest for cooking extended beyond the professional kitchens; he was a sought-after private chef for special occasions, such as weddings, receptions, school formals for his daughter's school, Providence Christian School, and he even graced the Ann Varnum show as a guest chef.

Peter was a dedicated member of First Presbyterian Church, in Dothan, where he contributed his time and electrical skills to the church and family friends. Peter's hobbies included gardening, swimming, and earlier in his life, being a pilot and flying his family around in his Cessna airplane. Peter was known to love and support his daughter, Catherine, on all her ventures, mainly her love of horseback riding. Many memories were made when they traveled to Ocala, Florida for horse shows, and he was always known as the best "show dad".

To his grandchildren, he was affectionately known as "pap", a testament to the close bond he shared with each of them. They will remember his thoughtful and thankful nature, always taking the time to express his gratitude and love for the simple joys in life. Peter's commitment to his community was evident through his volunteer work with Meals on Wheels, delivering not just food but also warmth and companionship to those he served. He never met a stranger, approaching everyone with an open heart and caring demeanor.

Those who knew Peter will remember him as a loving and selfless man, whose thoughtful gestures and kindness left a lasting impact on all who were fortunate enough to cross his path. He was the epitome of generosity, always putting the needs of others before his own.

Peter's legacy lives on through his children and their spouses: Eric Thosteson (Dory), Peter Thosteson, Jr. (Mel), Catherine Tew (Clay) and Elizabeth McKlemurry (Paul); and his adoring grandchildren, Landon, Lorelai, Ellie, Eli, Micah, Jake, Sarita, Dale, Lee Roy, Bonnie, Isaac, Aaron, and Avery. He is preceded in death by his parents, Dr. George C. and Elizabeth Thosteson, and his cousin, Jan Keiser.

A celebration of Peter’s life will be held on Wednesday, July 17, 2024 at 11am at First Presbyterian Church in Dothan with Pastor Robert Oats and Jay Joye officiating. The family will receive friends an hour prior to the service. He will be laid to rest in the Sunset Memorial Park Cemetery.

Serving as pallbearers will be Clay Tew, Landon Thosteson, Banks Smith, Jack Holmes, and David Hogg.
