Ray Von Barnes, known fondly as Ray, passed away peacefully on August 4, 2023, in Dothan, Alabama. Born on February 4, 1930, in Geneva, Alabama.

Ray was the beloved patriarch of a large and loving family. He is survived by his son, Eddie Barnes (Judy) and daughter in law, JoAnne Barnes. His legacy will continue to live on through his grandchildren, Anna Wells (Chad), Ashley Patterson (Chad), Lindsay Sheppard (Tim), and Cason Barnes (Karen), as well as his great-grandchildren, Preston Wells, Carson Wells, Brady Wells, Cody Patterson, Waylon Patterson, Payton Sheppard, Bennett Sheppard, Ellanie Barnes, Addyson Barnes, and Kenna Barnes. Ray was preceded in death by his parents, James and Dovie Barnes; his wife, Myrtle Barnes; his son, Wendell Barnes; and his sister, Virginia Barnes.

Ray's life was marked by a strong work ethic and a commitment to service. He served as a Dredger Captain in both Vietnam and Nigeria, where he demonstrated his leadership skills and dedication to his crew. His work took him to far-off places, but his heart always remained in Alabama. He was respected by his peers and loved by his crew, who admired his courage and dedication. His stories of adventures at sea were a source of endless fascination for his family and friends.

Ray was a simple person with a generous spirit that was evident in his everyday actions. He was always the first to lend a helping hand to those in need and made it a point to make everyone feel welcome. His family and friends will remember him as a man who lived his life with kindness. He taught his children and grandchildren the importance of hard work, the value of family, and the joy of living life to the fullest. He will be missed and fondly remembered by many.
