Richard Edgar Campbell CW4 Ret., 66, of Dothan passed away Wednesday, November 7, 2012 at a local hospital.
A memorial service will be held 1 pm, Saturday, November 17, 2012 at the Episcopal Church of the Epiphany in Enterprise with Father John Withrock and Mother Ede Plovanich officiating. Burial with full military honors will follow in Arlington National Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the Salvation Army, P.O. Box 1346, Dothan, AL, 36302.
Mr. Campbell was born November 6, 1946 in Morgantown, West Virginia, to the late William Lewis and Betty Marie Campbell. He grew up in West Virginia and Maryland and graduated from Middletown High School in Maryland. Upon graduation from Gettysburg PA College in 1968, he enlisted in the United States Army and served over twenty-five years until his retirement in 1994. For most of his military career, Mr. Campbell was a rotary wing pilot, instructor pilot, standardization instructor pilot, instrument flight examiner and fixed wing pilot as well. He served 4 years as a Nightstalker with the 160th Special Operations Aviation Group and was a veteran of the Vietnam War, Grenada Conflict and Operation Desert Shield. After retirement, he moved to Dothan where he was a member of Episcopal Church of the Nativity. He was a long time volunteer at Flowers Hospital and was the 2011 Adult Volunteer of the Year.
Mr. Campbell is survived by his wife of 43 years, Cynthia; his brother Kenton Campbell and wife Susan of Washington, D.C.; and two nephews, Carlton Haas of Hagerstown, MD and James Haas of Somerville, MA.
