Richard Eugene McLendon, Jr., 65, of Dothan passed away Thursday, February 17, 2011.
Services will be 4 pm Sunday at Sunset Funeral Home with Rev. Jerrod Jenkins officiating. Burial with military honors will follow in Sunset Memorial Park with Robert Byrd directing. The family will receive friends from 5-7 pm on Saturday at the funeral home. Pall Bearers are Hunter Chase Johnson, Roger DeWayne Ward, Rick Callahan, William Dickey, Mike Leonard, and Jim Choate. Honorary Pall Bearers are Danny Givens, Joe Ray, and Joe Jennings. Mr. McLendon was born April 16, 1945 in Montgomery, AL. He graduated from Sidney Lanier High School and joined the U.S. Army serving his country in Vietnam. He was the Owner/Operator of R & H Trucking. He spent the last 5 years as a Civilian Convoy Commander at Joint Base Balad, Iraq, and retired in 2010. He was awarded the Secretary of Defense Medal for the Defense of Freedom in 2009 in Baghdad, Iraq. He never met a stranger and was called friend by many. He was preceded in death by his parents Richard E. McLendon, Sr. and Mary Ferguson Gibson, and a sister of his heart, Martha Sue Threatt Thomas. Survivors include his Wife and Best Friend, Lynda Threatt McLendon; Daughter, Misty Lynn McLendon and Rick Callahan; Grandsons, Hunter Chase Johnson "Papas Bear"; Roger DeWayne Ward "Papa”s Little Man". Surviving siblings are Brothers James Robert McLendon; Wendell Hampton and Mary McLendon; Keith Irvin McLendon; and Sister Lisa Kay and Gary Miller. Surviving Brothers and Sisters of his heart are Joe and Billie Faye Threatt Ray; Roseanne Threatt Dickey; Mike and Angie Threatt Leonard. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
