RMCS Robert Earl Ray, USN, Ret., known affectionately as Bob by his friends and family, passed away peacefully on October 23, 2024, in Dothan, Alabama, at the age of 86. Born on October 12, 1938, in Cottonwood, Alabama, Bob's journey through life was marked by dedication to his country, love for his family, and a relentless work ethic that inspired many.
Bob's early life in Cottonwood was filled with the camaraderie and discipline of high school football. After graduating from Cottonwood High School. His strong sense of duty led him to enlist in the Alabama National Guard and then the Navy at the tender age of 17. Bob’s service to his country was distinguished and valiant, seeing combat during the Vietnam War aboard the USS Canberra. His military career was a testament to his bravery and commitment, taking him around the world before retiring in 1977.
After his notable military service, Bob embarked on a second career as an engineer with Southern Company, where he worked at numerous nuclear plants, including Farley. Bob's expertise was not confined to one place; he served and assisted with outages at several power companies across the United States as a respected consultant. His contributions to the field of engineering were significant and long-lasting.
Bob was predeceased by his beloved wife, Shirley Ray, and siblings Gladys Ray Hart, Addis Ray, Jewell Ray Williams, Junior Ray, Estelle Ray Hard, Ellen Ray, Leona Ray Frederickson, Sylvia Ray Strickland, and James Ray. He is survived by his loving children: Linda Barbarisi (Ronnie Rouse) of Chesapeake, VA, Linda Clark (Johnny) of Hartford, AL, James Ray of Dothan, AL, Barbara Ray of Dothan, AL, Diane Easterwood (Chris) of Macon, GA, and Brenda Ray of Slocomb, AL. Bob's legacy continues through his 10 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren, all of whom lovingly called him "Poppy" and brought him immense joy and pride. His numerous nieces and nephews will also hold dear their memories of Uncle Robert. He is also survived by his brother-in-law, Shelby Strickland.
Bob's life was filled with meaningful relationships and varied experiences. Those who knew him will remember his unwavering loyalty, his ability to tell a story that could captivate any room, and the wisdom he imparted to those around him. He had a knack for problem-solving that served him well both in his professional life and at home, where he often became the go-to person whenever family and friends needed advice or assistance. Bob's life was enriched by many meaningful experiences, roles, and relationships, but his most cherished and beloved role was being "Poppy."
Throughout his life, Bob maintained a quiet dignity and strength, facing life's challenges with grace and resolve. His absence will be deeply felt by all who had the pleasure of knowing him, but his spirit will continue to live on in the hearts of his family and the many lives he touched.
A celebration of Bob’s life will be held at 11:00 am on Monday, October 28, 2024 in Sunset Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Charles Goldsmith officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to service time. Bob will be laid to rest beside his beloved wife, Shirley, in Sunset Memorial Park following military honors. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Wounded Warriors Project in Robert's honor.
Serving as pallbearers will be Logan Easterwood, Colby Easterwood, Andy Ray, Jordan Barbarisi, John Michael Wiebold and Ian Trimm.
