Ronald Gilbert Watson Sr., affectionately known as Ron, passed away on August 12, 2023, in Ozark, Alabama, following a recent illness. Born on November 17, 1941, in Baltimore, Maryland, Ron's life was marked by a spirit of adventure, a passionate heart, and courageous service to his country.
Ron is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Thelma Watson, his two sons, Ronald Jr. and Donald, their wives Beth and Jennifer, and a host of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. His grandchildren, Trey Watson, Haydyn Livingston, Madyson Watson, and Savannah Purcell, remember him fondly, as do his great-grandchildren, Magnolia Jane Watson, Ava and Amelia Livingston, Tripp, Watson Tate, and Lyla Charles Purcell. Ron was preceded in death by his parents, Hyland and Elizabeth Hisley Watson, his sisters Lucille Skalniak and Kareen Duncan, his brother Hyland Watson Jr., and his great-granddaughter Lynleigh Ann Livingston.
Ron's life was marked by a deep commitment to service. He joined the U.S. Army in his youth and served with distinction for over 28 years, retiring as a First Sergeant in 1984. During his tenure, he lived in various locations, including a three-year stint in Germany, and assignments in Kansas, San Antonio, and Maryland. His service to his country culminated in guarding President Johnson for a year in Texas. After retirement, he continued to serve the public as a freelance investigator.
Beyond his professional life, Ron was a true military man, having worked with Civil Service at Ft. Rucker for a number of years. He loved to work on cars and was known for his stubborn determination. He had a special place in his heart for his White German Sheppard, Koda.
In the words of Winston Churchill, "Courage is what it takes to stand up and speak; courage is also what it takes to sit down and listen." Ron exemplified this courage throughout his life. He was a man of few words, but when he spoke, his words carried weight and wisdom. He was not afraid to stand up for what he believed in, nor was he too proud to sit and listen to the views of others.
Though he is no longer with us, his adventurous spirit, passionate love for his family, and courageous dedication to service will continue to inspire those who knew him. Ronald Gilbert Watson Sr.'s legacy of service, passion, and courage will live on in the hearts of his family, friends, and all those whose lives he touched.
A celebration of Ron's life will be held at 4:30 pm on Wednesday, August 16, 2023 at Sunset Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Charles Goldsmith officiating.
