Roosevelt Tharp, a resident of Headland, AL passed away on Saturday, July 3, 2010 at Southeast Alabama Medical Center. He was 52.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am on Friday, July 9, 2010 at the Sunset Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Rev. Walter Sims officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Park with Robert directing. The family will receive friends from 10-11 prior to the service at the funeral home. Mr. Tharp was born on November 3, 1957 in Houston County and spent his early years in Dothan. He was a 1976 graduate of Dothan High School and joined the U.S. Navy for 4 years. Mr. Tharp later attended Wallace College and UAB, where he received a degree in Biomedical Electronics, after which he worked for Michelin Tire Company for 26 years. He was an avid Chess player and won numerous awards competing in tournaments. Mr. Tharp was also an accomplished writer and composed a book and had several poems published. He also served in the Alabama National Guard. The Tharp family would like to give a very special thanks you to the Dothan High class of 1977. Mr. Tharp was preceded in death by his parents, Curtis and Emma Lee Tharp, a sister Arneatha Tharp, and a brother Curtis Tharp, Jr. Survivors include his wife Katherine Tharp of Headland; his sons, Byron Tharp of Headland and Ian Tharp of Headland; his brothers, Evester Tharp of Bessemer, AL and Earl Hayes of Dothan; a nephew Edward Tharp of Dothan; a niece Michelle Henderson of Orlando, FL; his grandmother Nonie Tharp; aunts and uncles, Annie Pearl Tharp, Raymond and Mary Tharp, Paul and Ruby Tharp, Louie and Ruth Jones, Mable Hasham, Hassie Grayson, Ermester Whiters, Sally Jeter, Hattie Jones, Betty White, Bonnie Ingram, Maggie Carroll, Lorine Robinson, Sylvester White, Jr., and Tullie White; his father and mother-in-law, Earnest and Georgia Jones; his brothers-in-law, Willie White, William Jones, and Chris White; a sister-in-law Monica Berry; special friends, Elijah Jones, A.V. White, Varner Merritt, Anthony Ware, Cleveland Pope, Charles Britt, Charlie and Jackie Laster, Lillie Taplin, Clarence and Marie Coleman, and Gracie Kelley; a host of special nieces and nephews, cousins and friends also survive.
