Dr. Roy Morris Driggers, 81, of Dothan passed away Sunday, August 21, 2011 at a local hospital.
rnRoy Morris Driggers was born on August 14, 1930, in Dothan, AL, the son of Lee Roy and Jessie Eagerton Driggers. A graduate of Dothan High School, he attended the University of Alabama where he was a member of the Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity. In 1956, he graduated from the Medical College of Alabama. Dr. Driggers completed his internship at Charity Hospital in New Orleans, LA. Following two years’ service at the US Naval Air Station in Atlanta, GA, he did his pediatric residency at Baylor University College of Medicine in Houston, TX. Dr. Driggers practiced pediatric medicine in Dothan from 1962 until his retirement in 1998, and was a founding partner of Dothan Pediatric Clinic. rnHe was a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics, a member of the American Medical Association and the Medical Association of the State of Alabama, and was past-president of the Houston County Medical Society. At Southeast Alabama Medical Center he had served as Chief of Staff and as Chair of the Department of Pediatrics. He was a member of the First Baptist Church, where he was a deacon and a long-time member of the adult choir. He was a member of the Dothan Kiwanis Club and served on the board of the Wiregrass Museum of Art. Dr. Driggers was well known in Dothan as a gifted pianist and shared his talents playing for charity events and receptions. He especially enjoyed playing Dixieland Jazz with a group of friends. He was an avid gardener and enjoyed spending time at his cabin on Compass Lake, FL. rnSurvivors include his wife of 54 years, Peggy Bottoms Driggers; two daughters, Dr. Allyson Driggers Gallagher and her husband Dr. Patrick G. Gallagher of Hamden, CT, and Gayle Driggers of Albany, NY; one son, R. Morris Driggers, Jr. and his wife Dawn Sellers Driggers of Clinton, SC; and four grandchildren: Taylor William Driggers, Benjamin James Driggers, Erin Colleen Gallagher and Patrick James Gallagher. He is also survived by a brother-in-law, Robert Bottoms and his wife Carolyn, and several nieces and nephews. rnThe family wishes to thank Jennell McKinney, Lorene Ward, LaBrenda Condry, Renee Thomas, the staff of The Terrace at Grove Park and the 6 East Nursing staff at Southeast Alabama Medical Center. rnMemorial services will be held Tuesday, August 23rd at 2:30 pm at First Baptist Church of Dothan with Dr. Johnny Fain officiating and Robert Byrd directing. The family will receive friends from 12:30 to 2:15 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the First Baptist Church Community Ministries, the Wiregrass Museum of Art, or the charity of your choice. Burial Date: January 1, 1970Visits: 3
