Sylvester Joseph Klava

March 21, 1925 — December 30, 2018

SGM Sylvester Joseph Klava (U.S. Army Ret.), a resident of Kinsey, AL passed away on Sunday, December 30, 2018 at his residence. He was 93 years old. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, January 2, 2019 at the Sunset Funeral Home Chapel with Father Patrick Gallagher officiating. Military honors will follow in Sunset Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 12-1:00 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Alacare Hospice or St. Columba Catholic Church. Mr. Klava was born March 21, 1925 in Warsaw, North Dakota and enlisted at the age of 18 just at the end of WWII. He was a retired U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam War (1 tour) and the Korean War (3 tours) with over 32 years of combined service. His illustrious military career was recognized with the achievement of over 15 ribbons and medals including the Bronze Star Medal, Commendation Medal, and Combat Infantryman Badge Award. During his military career he was stationed in Germany and in 6 states across the country. He attended Wallace College, loved to work in his garden, and work on remodeling his home. Survivors include the love of his life, his wife of 66 years, Verdean Klava; sister-in-law, Ann Conrad; several nieces and nephews. Serving as honorary pallbearers will be Darrell Langford, Mike Langford, Ven Langford, Larry Jacobs, and Ryan Andrews. The family would like to extend a very special thanks to the doctors, nurses, and staff of Alacare Hospice for their compassion, support and loving care.
