Taft Otis Thomley, a resident of Cookeville, Tennessee, formerly of Dothan, died early Monday morning, November 22, 2010, at home surrounded by his family. He was 78.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Wednesday, November 24, 2010, at Sunset Funeral Home Chapel with Bill Robinson officiating. Graveside services will follow in Memory Hill Cemetery with Robert Byrd directing. The family will receive friends from 12:00 until 2:00 P.M. Wednesday in the chapel at Sunset Funeral Home.
Mr. Thomley was born and reared in Wicksburg, Alabama, son of the late James Leon Thomley and Vera Greathouse Thomley. He was a graduate of Wicksburg High School. Mr. Thomley lived in Dothan for over forty years before moving to Gardendale, AL and later Cookeville, TN. He was a lifetime member of the Church of Christ and served as an elder at Honeysuckle Road Church of Christ and Gardendale Church of Christ. Mr. Thomley was retired from the U.S. Army Aviation Test Board at Ft. Rucker where he served as Logistics Manager. He was currently serving as Executive Vice-President of the Thomley Foundation, Inc. He served on the Dothan City Board of Education.
Mr. Thomley was preceded in death by two brothers, Raymond Thomley and Ronnie Thomley.
Surviving relatives include his wife of 54 years, Marjorie Vaughn Thomley, Cookeville, TN; three daughters, Donna Thomley Thomas and husband, Clay, Canton, GA, Sondra Thomley Crump and husband, Jerry, Cookeville, TN, Lisa Thomley Martin and husband, Phillip, Dothan, AL; three sons, David Taft Thomley and wife, Jeannie, Brentwood, TN, Thomas Vaughn Thomley and wife, Sheila, of Tampa, FL, Ronald Mike Thomley, Tyler, TX; eleven grandchildren, Lillie Nichole Hill, Phoenix, AZ, Kristy Cawthon, Houston, TX, Jennifer Collins, Birmingham, AL, Ryan Thomley, Nashville, TN, Phillip Thomley, Tampa, FL, Jeremy Crump, Tampa, FL, Jason Thomley, Tampa, FL, Heather Crump, Cookeville, TN, Hannah Crump, TN, Lauren Thomley, Tampa, FL, Taylor Ann Martin, Dothan, AL; 5 great grandchildren, Abi Kate, Davy, and Ellie Cawthon, Michael Collins, and Juno Skye Hill; two sisters, Ruby Jones, of Wicksburg, AL, and Maureen Barnes and husband, Charlie, of Enterprise, AL; two brothers, Ray Thomley, of Pansey, AL, and Ralph Thomley, of Selma, AL; several nieces and nephews.
Serving as active pall-bearers will be his nephews including Wallace Thomley, Kenneth Thomley, Joel Thomley, Roy Thomley, Randy Thomley, Casey Moore, Jason Moore, Stephen Deese, and Joseph Lamar Vaughn, Jr.
