Dothan

Troy Daniel Newton, known affectionately as Troy to his friends and loved ones, passed away peacefully on May 17, 2024, after a valiant battle with an extended illness. Born on August 11, 1946, in Lexington, Alabama, Troy's life was a testament to his passionate and loving nature. He departed this world in Dothan, Alabama, surrounded by the warmth of his family, leaving behind a legacy of intelligence, humor, and dedication to agricultural education.

Troy's journey began in the small town of Lexington, where he was born to William Roy and Gertrude Geneva Newton. He grew up with a strong sense of family, which would later be reflected in his own loving household. Troy was a proud graduate of Lexington High School in 1964 and continued his education at Auburn University. It was during his college years that he married his beloved wife, Rebecca "Becky" M. Newton, on September 9, 1966. Their enduring partnership of 57 years was a cornerstone of Troy's life. He completed his degree in Agribusiness Education in 1968, setting the stage for a remarkable career that would touch the lives of countless students.

Troy's professional life was characterized by his passion for teaching and inspiring young minds. He began his 40 year career in education as a Horticulture teacher at Foley High School, where he also achieved a Master's Degree in Education from the University of South Alabama. His dedication to education led him to the Huntsville Area Vocational and Technical Center, and he furthered his expertise with an advanced education degree from Auburn. After 14 years in the classroom, Troy took on the role of Executive Secretary and State Advisor of the Alabama Association of the Future Farmers of America. In this capacity, he fostered a love of agriculture in both students and teachers across the state, ensuring that his impact would be felt for generations to come.

Upon his retirement in 2009, Troy found joy in traveling with Becky, cherishing moments with his grandchildren, and crafting handmade gifts in his shop. He brought laughter to every gathering with his quick wit and was known for his ability to make friends wherever he went. Troy's move to Dothan from Montgomery was motivated by a desire to be closer to his grandchildren, demonstrating his unwavering commitment to family.

Troy's community involvement included membership in the Kiwanis Club and active participation in the Westgate Church of Christ. He was a man of faith and fellowship, always eager to contribute to the well-being of those around him.

He leaves behind his devoted wife, Rebecca "Becky" M. Newton of Dothan; his children, Steven (Glenda) Newton of Abbeville and Stephana (Steve) Poole of Lilburn, GA; his cherished grandchildren, Cade (Kaitlyn) Newton, Cole Newton of Abbeville, AL, Wilson Poole, Natalie Poole, and Olivia Poole of Lilburn, GA; and his treasured great-grandchild, Billy Newton of Abbeville, AL. He is also survived by his brothers, Grant (Valda) Newton of Medford, Oregon, and Paul (Cheryl) Newton of Florence, AL. Troy was preceded in death by his parents, William Roy and Gertrude Geneva Newton, and his brother, Lloyd Newton of Florence, AL.

In remembrance of Troy, we recall the words of Ralph Waldo Emerson, "To know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded." Troy succeeded in every sense, leaving a world enriched by his presence and a family inspired by his love. His spirit will continue to guide us, as vivid as the fields he cherished and as enduring as the lessons he imparted.
