Viola Elizabeth Stewart Altman

Viola Elizabeth Stewart Altman, a resident of Dothan, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Friday, November 3, 2017 at Extendicare Health. She was 90 years old.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, November 6, 2017 at the Sunset Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Stephanie Cox and Rev. John Sanders officiating. Burial will follow in Memory Hill Cemetery with Robert Byrd directing. The family will receive friends from 1:15-2:00 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Greystone United Methodist Church, 4401 Fortner Street, Dothan, AL 36305, or to your favorite charity.

Mrs. Altman was born December 7, 1926 in Panama City, FL to the late John Douglass Stewart and Maggie Ruth Rudd Stewart. She was a 1945 graduate of Dothan High School and immediately began her banking career with Dothan Bank and Trust (1st Alabama Bank and Regions Bank). She retired from Regions Bank in 1987 as Vice President. She became a member of Lafayette Street United Methodist Church in 1939 where she served on the Administrative Board of the church. She was also a member of the Ruth Sunday School Class, the United Methodist Women, and several other various church committees. Mrs. Altman was also a member of Landmark Park, the Dothan Area Botanical Gardens, the Wiregrass Museum of Art, the Dothan Wiregrass Art League, and a Charter member of the Mothers Club.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Oscar Altman, Jr. and her sister, Ruth Ellen Willis.

Survivors include her daughter, Peggy Nero; her sons, John (Cheryl) Altman and Bill (Darlene) Altman; granddaughter, Beth (Aaron) Rodgers; niece, Patti (Joe) Walker; nephew, Bob (Jan) Willis.
