Walter Hammond, 77, of Dothan passed away Friday, August 19, 2011 at Noland Hospital.
rnGraveside services will be held 10 am Monday, August 22, 2011 at Alabama Heritage Cemetery in Montgomery, AL with Rev. Brad Bradford officiating and Robert Byrd of Sunset Funeral Home directing. The family will receive friends from 2-4 pm Sunday at Sunset Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Calvary Baptist Church, 901 Montezuma Dr., Dothan, AL, 36303. rnMr. Hammond was born August 10, 1934 in Baltimore County, MD and resided the early part of his life there. He graduated from Towson High School in 1953 and was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He received his Bachelors and Masters Degree from the University of Maryland and taught high school and college in Baltimore for 23 years. Following his retirement he moved to Dothan and joined a contractor in the building business. He was enjoying his second retirement at the time of his death. Mr. Hammond was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Dothan. rnSurvivors include his wife of 50 years Fran Hammond of Dothan; a son Walter P. Hammond, Jr. of Glen Burnie, MD; brothers, Ronald D. Hammond and his wife Reba of Baltimore, MD and Albert B. Hammond and his wife Lati of Lewes, DE; sisters-in-law, Peggy C. McKinney and her husband Harrel of Montgomery, AL and Nancy C. Hubbard and her husband Tom of Montgomery, AL; nieces, Lisa Barnes, Nicole Burton, Lauren Vinson, and Caroline Hubbard all of Montgomery, AL; nephews, Trip Hubbard and Tim McKinney both of Montgomery, AL; several great nieces and nephews. rnPallbearers will be Harrel McKinney, Tom Hubbard, Barrie Barnes, Tim McKinney, Trip Hubbard, Bobby Burton, Jeremy Vinson, and Jimmy Hatfield.
