Walter D. Sabey

Walter D. Sabey, a resident of Dothan, AL passed away Saturday, March 1, 2014 at a local hospital.

Walter's life will be celebrated 11am Friday, March 7, 2014 with Rev. Chris Eckert officiating. Military Honors will follow in Sunset Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 10-11 am prior to the service at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Catholic Social Services, 557 West Main Street, Dothan, AL, 36301.

Walter was born in Leonia, New Jersey to the late Walter G. and Helen Sabey. He served his country proudly in WWII, Korea and Vietnam. In 1965, upon leaving active duty in the U.S. Army for over 20 years, he became a civilian pilot at Ft. Monmouth, N.J., where he flew the first night vision goggle flight in a VH-Huey helicopter. Walter was a lifelong member of the Aviation Museum at Ft. Rucker. He served faithfully each Friday as a volunteer tour guide.

Walter is preceded in death by his parents, and his wives Jerry and Dorothy.

He is survived by his wife Nancy Sabey; daughter Ginger Russell Scherck; sons, Douglas Sugar Sabey, Michael Sabey, Jay Linda Sabey and Peter Heather Sabey; a brother, Jack June Sabey; sisters, Suzanne Harro Weise and Carol Donald Welsher; step-children, Mark Jan Nelson, Laura Daniel Bateman, Eric Anna Nelson, and Matthew Stephanie Nelson; 19 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild.
