William Hall Hodges

Dr. William Hall Hodges of Dothan, Alabama, passed away on June 15, 2018. Born on September 26, 1941, in Marianna, Florida, Dr. Hodges was the son of the late Charles Hubert Hodges and Mary Hall Hodges of Marianna, Florida. Dr. Hodges was a 1959 Graduate of Marianna High School. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Birmingham-Southern College in 1963 and a DMD degree from the University of Alabama School of Dentistry in Birmingham, Alabama, in 1967. He served three years with the U.S. Army Dental Corps, including one year tour of duty in Vietnam, for which he was awarded the Bronze Star. In 1976 he completed an endodontic residency at the University of Alabama at Birmingham and moved that year to Dothan where he practiced endodontic dentistry for twenty-four years. Following his retirement in 2000, he pursued his lifelong interest in photography and began experimenting with a variety of film and cameras, particularly the rudimentary Holga camera. Using the Holga, Dr. Hodges created a series of dream-like black and white cityscapes of downtown Birmingham. These images were collected into a book entitled Third & Eighteenth, which was published in 2016. An extended exhibit of these photos was featured at the Wiregrass Museum of Art and also at Birmingham-Southern College in 2016. Additional photos taken by Dr. Hodges during his military service in Vietnam were presented at a reception at the Wiregrass Museum in January of 2018. During the 42 years he lived in Dothan, Dr. Hodges was an avid supporter of the arts. He served on the Wiregrass Museum of Art Board of Trustees for five years, including three years as treasurer. He was instrumental in the development and beautification of the Museum's gardens. Dr. Hodges is survived by his brother, Dr. Charles Hubert Hodges, Jr. (Sally) of Thomasville, Georgia; a niece, Elizabeth Hodges Benton (Robert) of Thomasville; nephews, William Reynolds Hodges (Tracee) of Rosemary Beach, Florida; Charles Hubert Hodges, III (Elizabeth) of Thomasville; and also by Grace Collins Hodges Barr of Atlanta. Other survivors include five grand nephews, four grand nieces, and several great-grand nieces and nephews. The family is profoundly grateful to Rebecca Marsella, Jill Smith, Zenobia Doster, Vada Bing, and Jelaine Robinson for their love and compassionate care of Dr. Hodges. A reception celebrating Dr. Hodges' life will be held on Saturday, June 30, at 10:30 a.m. at the Wiregrass Museum of Art. The family will inter ashes privately. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the Wiregrass Museum of Art, 126 Museum Ave., Dothan, Alabama 36303.
