William Allen Hornsby

April 14, 1929 — July 24, 2017

Major General William Allen Hornsby (US Army National Guard Retired), passed away on Monday July 24, 2017, at his residence. He was 88 years old.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 29, 2017 at Sunset Funeral Home Chapel with the ALEA Trooper Honor Guard Ceremony; Dr. Hays McKay and Rev. Kyle Gatlin will be officiating. Burial with Military Honors will follow in New Brockton City Cemetery with Robert Byrd directing. The family will receive friends from 9:30-11:00 a.m. prior to the service at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Covenant United Methodist Church, 3610 W. Main Street, Dothan, AL 36305.

MG Hornsby was born April 14, 1929 to the late Gaston and Erie Hornsby in Coffee County. He graduated Magna Cum Laude from Troy University and was employed as an Alabama State Trooper. During his tenure as a Trooper he attained the rank of Captain and supervised 8 counties in southeast Alabama. MG Hornsby was a member of the Alabama Army National Guard for 39 years, serving as the Adjutant General for the State of Alabama from 1983-1986. The armory in Daleville, Alabama was named Fort William A. Hornsby Armory in honor of the accomplishments during his career with the National Guard. He was awarded many medals including the Legion of Merit, the National Defense Service Medal, and the Distinguished Service Medal. He was a Mason for 50 years and was a member of Covenant United Methodist Church.

He is predeceased by an infant son, William Allen Hornsby, Jr., his parents, 7 brothers and 4 sisters.

Survivors include his wife, Betty Hornsby; a daughter, Dr. Lynn Hornsby-Lewis (Ray) Dallas, TX; two sons, Brock Hornsby (Fran) Hoover, AL, and Will Hornsby (Donna) Daphne, AL; two grandsons, Brock Lewis, Dallas, TX and Hunter Lewis, Brooklyn, NY; three granddaughters, Maegan Hornsby, Hartselle, AL, Erin Hornsby, Birmingham, AL and McKenna Hornsby, Daphne, AL; a brother, Arthur (Keum Sun) Hornsby, New Brockton, AL; four sisters-in-law, Mary Esther Hornsby New Brockton, AL, Betty T. Hornsby, Dothan, AL, Faye Hornsby, Troy, AL, and Gloria Gannon, Flower Mound, TX.

Honorary pallbearers include the active and retired Alabama State Troopers and other law enforcement personnel, and active and retired National Guard and other military personnel.

The family would like to express a very special thank you to the caregivers whose loving support helped them through the past several months including Sharon Hornsby, Obe and Sandy Farish, the staff of Covenant Hospice, Home Instead, and many other family members and friends.
