William Ray Sanders

William Ray Sanders, known affectionately as Ray to his family and friends, passed away peacefully on November 1, 2024, in Dothan, Alabama, at the age of 68. Born in Birmingham, Alabama, on February 28, 1956, Ray grew up in Athens, Alabama, where he left behind a legacy of love, intelligence, and unwavering faith.

Ray graduated from Athens High School in 1974, where he was a standout athlete in baseball and football. He continued his education at Athens State College, furthering his passion for learning and sports. Ray's professional life was marked by dedication and excellence. He retired from Southern Company at Farley Nuclear and later from Tennessee Valley Authority at Browns Ferry Nuclear. With a career spanning 46 years in the nuclear industry, Ray's expertise in maintenance programs, rigging and cranes, welding, and training was invaluable. His most recent position was as a contractor with the PIC Group at Farley Nuclear, where his commitment to his work was deeply respected by his colleagues.

Ray's interests were a testament to his vibrant spirit and active lifestyle. A lifelong baseball and football enthusiast, he served as the part time coach at Houston Academy, then with Wallace and then coached for the Post 12 Team for 25 years. His enthusiasm for the New York Yankees, especially during his time as a scout, along with his support for Auburn Football and Baseball, was well-known. He truly valued the moments he spent cheering for his favorite teams. In his spare time, Ray was a skilled woodworker and a dedicated Mason with the Dothan Masonic Lodge. His commitment to his faith was evident as a devoted member of Sylvan Grove Methodist Church in Midland City, Alabama.

Ray married the love of his life, Sandra Cobb Sanders, and together they shared 27 beautiful years. He was a loving father to Demi (C. J.) Ellis and a doting granddaddy to Loftin McCoy Ellis and Laine William Ellis. He is also survived by his sister, Wanda Sanders (James Ray) Carwile; sister-in-law, Robbie C. (Toady) Harden; brothers-in-law, Marty (Hailey) Cobb and Bobby Cobb; and numerous cherished nieces and nephews. He was also survived by Livie, his devoted 13-year-old German Short Haired Pointer whose unwavering loyalty and boundless affection for Ray illuminated his life and filled his heart with joy. Ray was preceded in death by his mother, Christine Ulrich Sanders, and his grandparents, Albert and Ora Green Ulrich.

Those who knew Ray will remember his loving nature and his intelligent approach to life's challenges. He was a man of deep faith, a quality that guided him throughout his life and brought comfort to those around him. Ray was known to enjoy life's simple pleasures, like savoring a can of Sundrop paired with a Whitt's BBQ sandwich and Lay’s Barbecue Chips, moments that reflected his appreciation for the joys found in everyday experiences.

A celebration of Ray’s life will be held at 1 pm on Monday, November 4, 2024 at Sunset Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Scotty Scott officiating. Ray will be laid to rest in Memory Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 11 am -1 pm.

Ray's life was a journey of love, commitment, and service. He will be deeply missed, but his spirit will remain a guiding light for his family and friends. As we say goodbye to Ray, we celebrate a life well-lived, full of passion and purpose.

William Ray Sanders lived a life that exemplified the values he held dear. His impact on his community, his unwavering support for his family, and his dedication to his faith and career will be remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him. May he rest in peace, and may his story continue to inspire love, intelligence, and faith in us all.
