William "Jerry" Walters

October 27, 1941 — November 4, 2024

William Jerry Walters, known affectionately as Jerry to his friends and family, passed away peacefully while holding his daughter and granddaughter’s hand on November 4, 2024, in Dothan, AL, at the age of 83. He was born on October 27, 1941, in Dunnavant, AL, and his journey through life was marked by his unwavering work ethic, his love for laughter, and his dedication to his family.

Jerry worked at Lilly Industries for 28 years, where he made a lasting impact in the paint manufacturing industry. His colleagues remember him as a hard worker who brought not only his skills but also his humor to the workplace. Jerry was also a proud Mason for over 50 years, contributing to the fraternity with the same dedication and joviality that he was known for in all aspects of his life.

His love for life was evident through his interests. Jerry loved to fish when he was able, enjoying the tranquility of the outdoors. He was also an excellent dancer, with a rhythm and joy that could light up any dance floor. A jokester and prankster at heart, Jerry never missed an opportunity to share a laugh or play a harmless prank on those around him, spreading joy wherever he went.

His zest for life extended to simple joys as well. Jerry had a love for playing the lottery, always hopeful for the big win, and he never missed his favorite TV shows, especially "Judge Judy." Watching those familiar faces and stories on the screen brought him comfort and entertainment. And when it came to sweets, Jerry had a particular soft spot for chocolate—he rarely turned down a chance to indulge in his favorite treats. Whether he was savoring a sweet snack, sharing a laugh, or just enjoying his favorite show, Jerry found happiness in life’s little pleasures.

Jerry was predeceased by his beloved wife, JoAnn Walters, his daughter, Melissa Martin, his brothers, Gerald Walters Jr. and Billy Ray Walters, and his sisters, Dorothy Sue Walters and Carolyn Mae Walters. He is survived by his daughters, Tonya Walker (Thomas) and Aimee Gilbert, and his special nieces, Peggy Walters Hawkins and Patricia McNab, who will forever hold dear memories of their kind and loving uncle.

Jerry's legacy continues through his grandchildren, Tabitha Yon (Rachel), Trae Yon (Erin), and many others, as well as several great-grandchildren. His family will fondly remember his storytelling, his laughter, and the wisdom he imparted.

As we bid farewell to Jerry, we celebrate a life well-lived—a life filled with love, hard work, and countless cherished moments. He leaves behind a legacy of laughter, generosity, and unwavering commitment to his family and community. Jerry will be deeply missed by his numerous nieces, nephews, friends, and all who were fortunate enough to know him.

A celebration of Jerry’s life will be held at 2:00 pm on Friday, November 8, 2024 in Sunset Funeral Home Chapel. Jerry will be laid to rest beside his beloved wife, JoAnn, in Sunset Memorial Park. The family will receive friends one hour prior to service time.
