Dothan

Thomas Hunley, a thoughtful, faith-filled, and loving husband, father, and grandfather, passed away peacefully on June 23, 2023, in Dothan, Alabama, after an extended illness. Born on September 8, 1937, in Elsmere, Kentucky, Thomas was the son of the late Henry and Minnie Hunley.

Thomas is survived by his devoted wife of many years, Janet Hunley. He was a loving father to his four children, Lynn Hunley, Yvonne Jenkins, Melinda O'Hearn, and Melanie McNeill. Thomas was also a proud grandfather to eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. He is further survived by his brother, John Hunley, and was preceded in death by his siblings, Henry Hunley, Jr., Earl Hunley, Richard Hunley, and Lou Hunley.

Thomas proudly served his country in the United States Army, instilling in him a strong sense of duty, honor, and patriotism that he carried throughout his life. After his military service, Thomas embarked on a career as a truck driver, which allowed him to explore the vast beauty of the United States and appreciate the value of hard work.

In his spare time, Thomas was a skilled carpenter who loved to repair broken things, such as furniture and odds and ends. His passion for craftsmanship brought joy to those around him, as he could often be found fixing items for friends, family, and neighbors. His commitment to his community was evident in his involvement with Ridgecrest Baptist Church and Bethel Baptist Church, where he cherished the bond, he shared with his church family.

Family was of utmost importance to Thomas, and he always placed their needs and happiness above all else. His nurturing spirit, unwavering support, and unyielding love will forever be remembered by those who knew him best. The memories he created with his loved ones, whether it was attending antique car shows, camping with friends, or playing cards, will be cherished for generations to come.

Thomas was known for his thoughtfulness and kindness, always taking the time to listen to others and offer a helping hand when needed. His faith was a cornerstone of his life, and he lived each day guided by the principles of love, compassion, and forgiveness. As St. Francis of Assisi once said, "For it is in giving that we receive." Thomas embodied this sentiment, as his generosity and selflessness touched the lives of countless individuals.

A celebration of Thomas' life will be held at 2 pm on Tuesday, June 27, 2023 in Sunset Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Ricky Plummer officiating. Entombment will follow in Sunset Memorial Park with military honors in Sunset Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Tuesday from 1-2 pm.
